Royale's New Curator

After a 12 month run as curator for Cafe Royale, I will be stepping down to take more time for my own artwork. Michael Mason will be taking over starting in December.

Michael obtained a BFA Painting from SFAI and has curated art shows and gatherings in SF as well as LA. For the past five years Michael has been teaching art to children, finding great satisfaction sharing the art making process with them.
Thanks to all who attended the events and brought them to life.

CAFE ROYALE Presents:Christopher Murdoch: Under Every Grief and Pine 11/1- 11/30

Christopher Murdoch created the show “Under Every Grief and Pine” as an attempt to chronicle a period of loss, confusion and depression in his life. It began from “a dark mental state”. Murdoch stated of his life at the time of the show's inception: “I was sure that nothing would ever be normal again.” The show documents the artist’s healing process and inevitable transformation.

The opening will take place at Cafe Royale at 800 Post Street (@ Leavenworth) on Thursday, November 5th from 8pm to midnight.

Additional Notes About his Process:

Murdoch started using panels of wood that he found at illegal dump sites, sidewalks and piles of discarded furniture. "Since all of the wood had its own nicks, dings, and scars and had been carelessly discarded after it had outlived its usefulness I felt we had something in common". He found the wood could not only hold paint and old scraps of paper well, but that one could also carve into it easily. "I could put down a couple layers of paint and scrape past away with a knife exposing the layers beneath with still a hint what had been scraped away staining the grain."

Most of the human figures were started painting and cutting out of paper are void of features/faces. "I wanted them to be more place holders than anything and felt that facial expressions or blatant narratives would be too cheesy and contrived. I wanted the figures to remain solitary against the grain of the wood or the fields of color and pattern they were situated in. To me this better represented loneliness. It gave me more of a feeling of people being solitary islands".

CAFE ROYALE Presents: Megan Wolfe: Mass Populous: September 1-27, 2009

In her latest body of work, Megan Wolfe examines issues of survival and coexistence through wildlife found in the urban environment. However, ‘urban wildlife’ is a hypocritical term. Portraying masses of pigeons competing for space and food, a parallel is drawn between our culture and the natural world. In a way, nature has adapted, feeding on our scraps, walking alongside us, in order to survive. Likewise, though mankind has progressed, it retains a glimmer of its animalistic qualities. Under the right conditions, we equally become a mass populace consumed by self-preservation. In either case, nature becomes a bastardization of itself, with neither party able to reconcile their similarities, and always continually at odds with one another.

The shows opening will take place at Cafe Royale at 800 Post Street (@ Leavenworth) on Thursday, 09/03 from 8pm to midnight.

Cafe Royale Presents: Eli Harris: In Transit: August 1-28, 2009

The city streets pulsate with the ebbs and flows of human propulsion. There is a beauty to being lost in an urban landscape wandering through the everyday lives, if only for a moment, of an inexhaustible sea of strangers. The work of Eli Harris captures this non-stop parade of humanity through fleeting moments of social interaction. The fractured nature of memory syntax is relayed to the pages of books that have been given a new relevance as defined by the artist. These pages are unique to each experience, categorizing a series of moments that make up a string of banal or evocative events. They are men, women, children, tourists, bums, etc., we unconsciously profile and save to memory. This is the everyday life of Eli Harris in transit. This is the life of a living city.

The show runs from August 6 through August 28th, 2009

Cafe Royale Presents: Daniel Valadez: Severed Equilibrium: July 2-27, 2009

In this body of work, Daniel Valadez explores the relationship of individual's adaption to and merger with the surroundings in which they live. Daniel examines life in the city to explore this concept. Towers of cement, decaying walls, and the vibrant colors that blanket a city are a world focus; a world with which the figures that he paints are greatly attached, constructing a world that leaves his figures transparent and stagnant. His figures bleed into their environment and become their surroundings. These beings transform into the superficial and lifeless elements of the city that around them. Their attachment to one world suppresses the other. Nature, the physical world, struggles to be heard and seen. Although nature has been dominated by the man-made world, it is what will ultimately thrive. It makes itself undeniably present through this body of work. Colliding with inner city elements, Daniel’s figures are placed center stage fighting to rediscover forms of life that are rare or hard to come by in many areas of a big city. Forms of life that battle to find significance in the consciousness of those who have succumbed to a life that leaves no say in how long they might exist on this planet.

CAFE ROYALE Presents: BLOWING IT: Teppei Ando: June 4th- June 30th, 2009

BLOWING IT is a portrait series by Oakland based artist Teppei Ando in medium of manipulated stains on clay-board. Each portrait represents the life of a character disconnected from an era in which progress happens rapidly within their lifetime yet somehow each remains distant from contributing to it. These are portraits of characters in their environment; an ocean of anxiety, despair and stress polluted by quick fixes and over stimulation. They've adapted, they socialize, they gather, and create their own caves away from the smudge culture. They're just people, in a state of existence in the dark liquid environment.

The show runs from June 1 through June 30th, 2009.

D YOUNG V: NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH Trailer

The story of "Live Forever" moves forward. Its newest chapter reveals a glimpse into urban society near ruin looking to redefine order.

D YOUNG V: "NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH" Trailer
Directed by: Colin M. Day

Scroll to view show details beneath the trailer.

CAFE ROYALE presents: D. YOUNG V: NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: May 1- May 30, 2009

"NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH"
is the second installment of an ongoing series by San Francisco based artist David Young V. Photos and information from the first installment, "Live Forever" are available for viewing at http://babylonfalling.com . The series presents an alternate version of San Francisco after the socio-economic collapse of the world financial system and the deterioration of what we have known to be the American way of life. Civil unrest and widespread factionalizing of society result in a prolonged and unsuccessful military occupation of the bay area. The focus of this installment deals with people beginning to organize new forms of law and social structure amongst themselves in a city (and country) with no operational government. This results in the formation of district and neighborhood based militia groups and volunteer police forces with the intention of providing safety and security in their own territories. All works displayed in ‘Neighborhood Watch’ are large-scale brush/pen & ink representations of abandoned military and public service vehicles that have been modified and re-purposed to fit the patrol needs of the local population.
